Storyline
It is 1952 in Romania. At a monastery, two Roman Catholic nuns are attacked while they were heading to collect an artefact. The other nun prays and then sees the other nun bloodied by an attack. She flees from the demon nun Valak (Bonnie Aarons) and hangs herself. Her decaying body is discovered later by Frenchie. After that, An investigation is initiated under Father Anthony Burke (Demian Bichir) assisted by young novitiate Irene (Taissa Farmiga). They approach Frenchie who leads them to the abbey where Victoria`s body was and they procure the keys from her corpse and bury her. They return to the abbey after burial and encounter the Abbess (Gabrielle Downey), who asks them to come another day. The demon later attacks Frenchie but he survives.
The demon Valak attacks Burke later that night. When the sound of some music awakens him and he is buried alive with a bell left with him. Irene hears the bell and reaches out for Burke and pulls him out of the coffin where he finds some occult books. In the course, they are attacked by Valak.
Next day at church they meet Oana (Ingrid Bisu). Oana tells them about Valak, his origin and how he was trapped using the same artefact. It had the blood of Christ. She tells how Valak disguises in form of a nun. Burke returns to abbey again to meet Abbess only to find her demonic. Irene too is attacked by Valak. Then she discovers that all other nuns were just visions, not real. She was praying all alone this long.
